I just put in torches, they make caves super fun

ha ha darkness actually only adds the mildest layer of actual difficulty
but it adds crazy ambiance
I made all caves below level 1 dark, but most of them are peppered with torches
SUCH a good increase in tension.. that’s also where you start getting the fancy new chests
of course, torches are properly affected by spells like water and fire, bombs, etc.
